“I first learned about Schweiss doors through fellow FedEx pilot friends that had their own hangar at an airpark in Memphis; it had an old cable version bifold door. I got a lot of information and advice from them when I was putting plans together to build our hangar. I started looking about 10 years ago and checked with another hangar door manufacturer. Schweiss seemed so much more developed and evolved and seemed like Schweiss was well established. I felt more comfortable knowing Schweiss would back up their product better.”
- Steve Vihlen, pilot
Locust Grove, GA
Steve Vihlen of Locust Grove, Georgia makes his living currently as a Captain on a 767 FedEx cargo plane that takes him on national and international routes. He's no stranger to the sky; having earned his pilot's license at an early age that later led him to join the Air Force and become a F-16 combat pilot for eight years.
He's been with FedEx for nearly 30 years and previously flew the FedEx Boeing 777 that took him on around the world flights.
Steve's main passion these days is flying sailplanes. He's got an American-made older classic 1964 Schweizer 126-B glider and a German-made Alexander Schleicher ASG-29 modern single-place racing glider that he bought new from the factory in 2006. The ASG-29 has a 59' wingspan. He also flies a 7AC Aeronca Champ and uses his vintage 1952 Cessna L-19/0-1 to tow the gliders. The L-19 is in its original colors and was Air Force from 1952-1973. Civil Air Patrol used it until it was civilianized in 1978.
To store these aircraft he built a 70' x 70' hangar adjacent to his home and to the runway at his Mallard's Landing Airpark. The four-plane hangar built by Watford Steel Buildings of Adel, Georgia has a Schweiss 60' x 12.5' bifold liftstrap door on it with a manual side latch system and exterior sheet metal cladding. Inside it is decked out with 15' x 32' mancave that connects to an outside bar, guest quarters with a living room, bathroom, shower and kitchenette. The entire hangar, ceiling and walls have 4" white insulation.
"The hangar is wonderful. We poured the foundation within a week of when we poured the foundation for our house. When we lived in Memphis I rented a hangar at a nearby privately owned public use grass airstrip. We built this hangar because we wanted our own hangar near our home," explained Vihlen."
The door was hung by Premier Building Systems of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Vihlen said he finished the installation by putting in the motors, liftstraps and autolatches all by himself.
The love of flying is shared among other family members. Two of the Vihlen's four boys are also licensed pilots. His oldest son, Ryan, has his own private power and glider license. Two other sons have soloed in gliders. His second-oldest son, Nolan, is a Captain in the Marine Corps and flies Sikorsky CH-53 Heavylift Transport helicopters for the past seven years. He soloed his first glider at age 16 and a year later in a Super Cub.
"I first learned about Schweiss doors through fellow FedEx pilot friends that had their own hangar at an airpark in Memphis; it had an old cable version bifold door. I got a lot of information and advice from them when I was putting plans together to build our hangar. I started looking about 10 years ago and checked with another hangar door manufacturer. Schweiss seemed so much more developed and evolved and seemed like Schweiss was well established. I felt more comfortable knowing Schweiss would back up their product better," noted Vihlen.
He chose a bifold door over a hydraulic door because he was more familiar with it and he always liked the look of the bifold door better. He also liked the fact that you could park closer to the outside of the door.
"The Schweiss door is easy to install as long as you follow the instructions it is not complicated and it's easy to maintain; it met my expectations and I haven't had any difficulty with it. My glider club in Arkansas had the non-powered accordion doors on their hangar. They scared me a lot because of the pinching hazard. I really don't have any experience with a hydraulic door," said Vihlen.
He said the people at Schweiss Doors were helpful and pleasant to work with during the ordering process.
Vihlen bought this German-made Alexander Schleicher ASG-29 single-place racing glider new from the factory in 2006. It has a 59' wingspan. He also owns a Schweizer 126-B glider. The ASG-29 characteristics are listed below.
The Schleicher ASG-29 is a German sailplane in production by Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co since 2006. It can be flown as an 18 meter Class glider or as a 15 meter Class glider. The 'G' indicates this is a design of designer Michael Greiner. It is a refinement of the popular ASW-27 and for certification purposes it is designated the ASW-27-18.
The ASG-29 has plain flaps and winglets. The structure is a complex composite of carbon, aramid and polyethylene fibre reinforced plastic. This permits a light structure with the strength to carry up to 170 liters (322 pounds) of water ballast, thus permitting the widest possible range of wing loadings for weak and strong soaring weather.
The unmotorized version made its first flight November 9, 2005. The 'E' version has a self-sustaining engine (SOLO 2350, 18 hp 2-stroke) and was certified in February 2008.
By August 2014 the numbers of ASG-29 produced had reached 163 turbos and 87 pure gliders.
Crew: One
Capacity: 202 kg (447 lb) water ballast
Length: 6.59 m (21 ft 7 in)
Wingspan: 18.00 m (59 ft 1 in)
Height: 1.30 m (4 ft 3 in)
Wing area: 10.5 m2 (113 ft2)
Aspect ratio: 30.4
Empty weight: 280 kg (617 lb)
Gross weight: 600 kg (1,323 lb)
Maximum speed: 270 km/h (168 mph)
Maximum glide ratio: 50
Rate of sink: 0.47 m/s (92.5 ft/min)
The outside of the bifold door is clad with sheet metal that matches nicely in color with the rest of the hangar.
When the bifold door is open it provides a nice shaded canopy that helps keep the hangar cool in summer.
Mallard's Landing Airpark at Locust Grove, Georgia in Henry County is home to about 150 property owners with many of the residents naturally being commercial pilots (after all, the nearby Atlanta airport is the world's busiest airport and a major hub for travel throughout the Southeastern United States), plus active and ex-military pilots who have flown in every theater of combat from World War II to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
The airport is identified as GA04 and features pilot controlled lighting as well as a sophisticated pilot controlled weather station, but the best part about being in an aviation-centric community is that pilot homeowners can easily taxi to the runway from hangars located right on their lots next to their home.
Naturally, any community built around a grass landing strip will have aviation focused events ranging from two annual fly-ins to Bob's Movie Night at a full-sized "old-timey" movie theater in one pilot homeowner's hangar. There is also a state-of-the-art pool, tennis courts and plenty of green space.

Easy access to the 11,160 sq. ft. hangar in his 80 ft x 152 ft. building is through a quiet-operating 50' x 17' 7.5" Schweiss hydraulic door. The hydraulic pump for the door is mounted out of sight above the rafters to make best use of all available space within the hangar. He also has a remote opener to enable him to open and close the door without having to leave the cockpit. Three 3.5' x 2.5' windows in the door give him optimum use of available light into the in-floor heated hangar and the hydraulic one-piece door, when open, provides a nice shaded canopy. |

Star Equipment of Blaine, MN was in charge of installing a 19' 11" x 22' 8" tall Schweiss bifold liftstrap door with automatic latches and electric photo eye sensors on the physics building. The specially designed door has a rather unique application of wide glass panels at the top that nearly surround it all the way to the man door alongside it.
