'Jesse from Texas,' as he prefers to be known for this story, is the elated owner of a Schweiss bifold liftstrap door. He and his family live in a stunning 5,000 sq. ft. hangar-home just a taxiway from the landing strip at Threshold Ranch in Boerne, Texas at the outskirts of San Antonio.
The new home, constructed by Diamante Custom Homes of San Antonio is something to behold, but it's a safe bet that Jesse takes equal satisfaction hanging out in his 2,000 sq. ft. attached hangar that houses his 2008 Cirrus SR22 G3 Turbo "Perspective."
“I was really surprised that the 'big guys' with the superior product could be so affordable. I feel like I got the premium name brand - I expected to pay a premium, but really I got the best price and probably saved 15 percent on my door. The liftstraps and automatic latch system are slick. I feel a lot safer with straps than a cable that can snap on me.”
- Jesse
Boerne, Texas
After serving honorably as a United States Marine, Jesse became a licensed pilot in 2004 and built time as an accomplished flight instructor until getting hired at Republic Airways where he flew for five years behind the yoke of an Embraer 145 twin-engine regional jet. This lead up to purchasing his first plane, a 2008 Cirrus SR22 G3 Turbo. After that time span he left commercial flying to co-manage a family healthcare IT consulting firm and continued working as a successful entrepreneur in the professional services industry.
Jesse became familiar with Schweiss Doors during visits to the Oshkosh airshow and had seen Schweiss doors at various airports. His hangar has a 48.7' x 12.1' custom made bifold liftstrap door complete with a remote opener, a red painted frame for a great protective look, and an autolatch and windpin setup that will keep it tight to his hangar even in the stiffest West Texas winds strong enough to make a cowboy cry.
He did some shopping around before deciding on a Schweiss bifold door.
"I was really surprised that the 'big guys' with the superior product could be so affordable. I feel like I got the premium name brand - I expected to pay a premium, but really I got the best price and probably saved 15 percent on my door," said Jesse. "I also believe the bifold, typically in my situation, gave me a little more clearance than the one-piece hydraulic door and it imposed a little less stress forces than the hydraulic swing door."
A lot of foresight went into his hangar. He had the builder put in steel I-beams for added support and ordered the door wider than the 37' wingspan on his Cirrus; a smart move just in case he decides to go to a bigger aircraft or when and if the time comes for resale it could just be what the next pilot might be looking for.
"It's a very nice door, aesthetics are great and it operates great," said Keith Norman, Business Development Director at JAS Development Corporation in San Antonio of which Diamante Custom Homes is in its residential division.
"The liftstraps and automatic latch system are slick. I feel a lot safer with straps than a cable that can snap on me. I have one remote control in the plane and another in the golf cart. I'm opening and closing the door without bending over and pulling a pin," explained Jesse. "I like the aesthetics . . .not all doors are created equal; it's a good balance between beauty and functionality, I think it's a industrial-strength door.
This view from Jesse's office, that sits above the 57' x 40' hangar, shows the automatic latch system on his bifold door.
"When the prewired door arrived, I unwired the power pack from the door so I could have the electrician run the wires behind the sheetrock. So even though it has this industrial-grade look you'll notice my power panel has a pretty clean installation," noted Jesse.
Jesse secured the services of Karl Wedin, a local welding hand and person who has built a couple dozen different structures at the Boerne Stage Airfield to do the install.
"Schweiss has the largest repository of instructions online for just about any scenario. The instructions were abundant and I called tech support several times about different recommendations. The customer service at Schweiss was always tremendous and top-notch. They've always been extremely helpful; they have to be the biggest/smallest company and family business that I've ever worked with. They operate like they have 10 people in their family business."

The landing strip at Threshold Ranch airpark is just a short taxiway from his home. The bifold door was built large enough to accept larger planes than his Cirrus.
Jesse likes aesthetics and ordered his well-insulated bifold door with a Schweiss red painted frame. He also unwired the power pack from the door so he could have the electrician run the wires behind the sheetrock leaving the door control sitting alone on the far wall.
Jesse can start or stop his bifold door at any time. When open it provides a nice shaded canopy. It also has a walk door located to the left of the bifold door.
Two handheld remotes, one inside the plane and another in his golf cart, lets Jesse open and close his door without leaving the cockpit or having to stand inside beside the door.
Jesse can use his golf cart to maneuver his plane in or out of his hangar. Steel I-Beams located at the sides and above the bifold door give it more than adequate support.
This aerial view of Jesse's spacious 5,000 sq. ft. home, shows where he can follow the taxiway to the landing strip at Threshold Ranch airpark.
A steel ladder, that Jesse jokes leads to a hidden bookcase in his office, gives him an additional avenue to come in and out of his hangar.
