The famous old Yankee Stadium was nicknamed "The House That Ruth Built," derived from Babe Ruth, the baseball superstar whose prime years coincided with the stadium's opening and the beginning of the Yankees' winning history.
That iconic stadium located in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, was the home ballpark of the New York Yankees since 1923. In 2006, the Yankees began building a new $2.3 billion stadium in public parkland adjacent to the stadium. Yankee Stadium closed following the 2008 baseball season and the new stadium opened in 2009.
“The bifold doors are heavy-duty, very solid and functional. They will be a long-lasting solid piece of equipment that I don't ever see failing. I like how easy they are to use.”
- Paul Wassenbaugh
Senior Project Manager
Hunter Roberts Construction
Babe Ruth, Lou Gherig, Roger Maris or Mickey Mantle would be thrilled to knock a few out of the new park that underwent numerous additional enhancements during this past winter off-season. Included on the new enhancements (detailed below) are five Schweiss bifold liftstrap designer doors.
The largest of the custom-made bifold doors is 27'5" x 11'4," followed by two 23'4"x9'2" doors and two 21'10" x 9'2" doors. All the doors are fitted with electric photo eye sensors, black liftstraps, manual latches and alike-keyed opening and closing switches. Four of the doors are clad in a high tech brushed aluminum. They finished the facade and the door to basically match itself so when the doors are down they blend in with the facade and don't reveal what's inside.
One of the stadium doors performs functions at the AT&T Sports Lounge located at the mezzanine level on the left field line. The AT&T door is clad in wood and tile on the outside and when it is closed you cannot tell it is an operational door. Two additional concession/bar areas, with two doors each set at right angles, are located in the right centerfield and left centerfield areas on the Triple Zero level.
Hunter Roberts Construction Group was awarded the off-season enhancement project. They also performed design/build services to construct three 5,000-space parking garages at the new Yankee Stadium facility. Their achievements include leading some of the most complex projects across the Metropolitan regions of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Paul Wassenbergh, Senior Project Manager and Director of Interiors Preconstruction for Hunter Roberts, was part of the Construction Management team that procured and managed the installation of the doors. The actual installation work was performed by one of their partners, AJ Garage Door & Services of Oakdale, New York. Exterior-cladding was applied to the doors by Barrett, Inc. of Danbury, Connecticut.
The Toyota Terrace is located just to the right of Frank's Redhot Terrace and offers a view of the other bullpen. This fan-friendly location has two 21'10"x9'2" Schweiss designer doors.
"The Yankee's were looking for a bifold door, Schweiss wasn't in the spec, but I did put your name forward as an equivalent. We recommended Schweiss to the architectural and design team and they accepted it," noted Wassenbergh.
After scouting a few other door companies he said the simplicity of design, along with the liftstraps was a part of why they chose the Schweiss bifold doors. Bifold doors were also chosen because they didn't have room for other components such as a hydraulic pump or counterweights. Everything being compact on the Schweiss door was also a deciding factor.
"The bifold doors are heavy-duty, very solid and functional. They will be a long-lasting solid piece of equipment that I don't ever see failing. I like how easy they are to use," added Wassenbergh.
“I like the Schweiss doors a lot. They are very unique and user-friendly once installed. Everywhere I've ever installed these doors, they have become the focal part of the entire property; they really do. There were 30 trades on the Yankee Stadium job, and when we had those doors working it basically came to a standstill. There are some particulars of the Schweiss doors that are very favorable to some people.”
- Anthony Rosalia, Owner
AJ Garage Door & Services, NY
Anthony Rosalia, owner of AJ Garage Door has installed both the Schweisss hydraulic and bifold models. He said he believed the price and functionality of the doors played a big part in choosing Schweiss for Yankee Stadium.
"I'm very familiar with the larger doors," said Rosalia. "I like the Schweiss doors a lot. They are very unique and user-friendly once installed. Everywhere I've ever installed these doors, they have become the focal part of the entire property; they really do. There were 30 trades on the Yankee Stadium job, and when we had those doors working it basically came to a standstill. There are some particulars of the Schweiss doors that are very favorable to some people."
Fans attending Yankee games will now experience a more family-friendly atmosphere with such features as an expanded Batter's Eye Deck, bullpen landings, sports lounge and party decks.
The new Sunrun Kids Clubhouse is outfitted with a variety of interactive and engaging activities for the Yankees' youngest fans and these young fans are the future of Yankee baseball.
The largest of the Schweiss bifold liftstrap doors at Yankee Stadium is a 27'5"x11'4" door at the AT&T Sports Lounge located on the mezzanine level on the left field line.
New enhancements were developed this offseason at Yankee Stadium. Listed below are the changes accessible to all Yankee Stadium ticketed guests:
The new Sunrun Kids Clubhouse is outfitted with a variety of interactive and engaging activities for the Yankees' youngest fans. Yankees-inspired climbers, slides and tunnels are among the highlights of the space, which also provides shaded areas. Shaped like a mini-baseball field with a soft artificial surface, the 2,850-square-foot area is located on the 300 Level in right field and is outfitted with Yankees-themed playground equipment, including oversized baseballs, bases and baseball cards.
Children will be able to climb, slide, and play hide-and-seek among the colorful fixtures, including a 6-foot-high replica World Series trophy. Parents can join their children or choose to oversee them from the dugout a few feet away. Television monitors will ensure that no one misses a minute of game action. The Clubhouse also includes family restrooms with changing tables and a private space for nursing mothers, including lounge chairs, a television and power outlets.
The Masterpass Batter's Eye Deck is an outdoor gathering space in center field with clear full views of the playing field and the Stadium available to all ticketed guests and doubles as a pregame party area for groups. Drink rails, craft beers, cocktails and unique food offerings make it an ideal space for socializing while watching the game.
The new Frank's RedHot Terrace and Toyota Terrace are two open-air areas designed to encourage socializing among guests while providing them a view of the game from the outfield, as well as a unique look at the action in their respective bullpens. This space can be purchased for pregame group parties. A full bar features signature cocktails, craft beers and food offerings. Drink-rail locations at the landings will have power/USB outlets.
The new AT&T Sports Lounge featuring DirecTV service at Section 134 on the Field Level will include a full bar with craft beers and cocktails. Tables, stools and large-screen televisions tuned to the Yankees broadcast and other live sporting events will provide a sports-bar atmosphere on the Stadium's main outdoor concourse in left field. Additionally, power/USB outlets will be available for charging phones or tablets.
Located at Sections 311 and 328, the new Budweiser Party Decks each feature shaded stand-alone bar areas serving beer, cocktails and food. Drink rails and bar-stool seating provide a relaxed and casual setting from which to enjoy sweeping views of the field and game action.
Two 23'4"x9'2" bifold doors are set at right angles to each other at the new Frank's Redhot Terrace. All of the doors have keyed alike opening and closing switches and electric photo eye sensors.

In late 2004, construction veteran Jim McKenna, co-founder of Hunter Roberts Construction Group, decided that great projects could still be realized without asking owners to compromise their goals, requiring designers to sacrifice their vision, and without builders cutting corners to meet their bottom line.
Hunter Roberts recently performed design/build services to construct Yankee Stadium off-season enhancements. Prior to this they provided three parking garages at the new facility. The garages contain approximately 5,000 spaces with recreational facilities on the roof. Hunter Roberts has also provided construction management services for Red Bull Arena, home to the Major League Soccer team. Red Bull Arena consists of a 25,000-seat, 380,000-SF soccer stadium housing the team's fitness center, executive offices and conference rooms, kitchen, service club facilities, a pub, 30 private suites, the team's gift shop, and a press area / media room.
Clients are confident that relying on Hunter Roberts to build their most valued, high profile projects is the best choice. The company continues to look to the future, bringing in new talent and adjusting company culture to suit the times in which we work. There's new training, new technology, and there are new goals to exceed.
The Toyota Terrace features a full bar and food offerings as well as USB outlets for charging phones or tablets. Both of these Schweiss 23' 4" wide doors are clad in high tech brushed aluminum.
Their company structure provides clients with direct access to the senior management team responsible for their projects. Hunter Roberts teams include specialists in a range of disciplines from pre-construction, purchasing, scheduling, logistics, BIM, CAD, accounting, and estimating.
Hunter Roberts work contributes visibly and economically to surrounding cities and towns.
