Tom Struthers of Winnipeg, Canada built a new 4,000 sq. ft. home. It has three garages with Schweiss bifold/liftstrap doors. The green 1980 Triumph TR8, also referred to as the Rare 8 Triumph, right, is owned by Struther's friend, Brian Lanoway, and the Triumph Wedge, next to it, are prized cars. His Schweiss bifold liftstrap showroom garage doors are 8' ft. x 8 ft. He has another 10' x 10' Schweiss bifold door on his garage.
A lot of planning goes into new home construction. Tom Struthers of Winnipeg, Canada extended his attention to detail right down to his garages. The Schweiss Bifold liftstrap garage doors have an enhanced appearance utilizing a vertical pine wood exterior to highlight each of his three doors.
Struthers is a retired businessman who owns Cobmar, Inc. Cobmar provides services to Western Canadian Agriculture markets. It also deals in real estate, with Struthers continuing to offer construction work consulting.
Struthers was the general contractor for his new energy efficient 4,000 sq. ft. home comprised of 2,200 sq. ft. living space, a 1,000 sq. ft. showroom for his old car collection and an 800 sq. ft. shop.
"The house is situated on a lot with huge tall windows facing south to take advantage of solar gain during winter months. It is built of insulated concrete form and is super-insulated and energy efficient," explained Struthers.
Tom Struthers belongs to many car clubs. His collection of drivable British cars includes an Austin Healey, a Jaguar and four Triumphs dating from 1953 to 1981. He is shown with his 1953 Austin Healey and 1953 Jaguar XK120 parked by two of his Schweiss bifold shop doors.
Even, efficient, heat, is provided by in-floor heat using warm board and Glycol, plus an air-to-air heat pump and a large gas-fired boiler and an electric furnace.
The living area is modern open space with a huge island kitchen, open dining and living room with a two-sided fireplace separating the living room from the den. The 13 ft high ceilings consist of Douglas fir decking and Western Arch rib laminated beams. Most of the trim pieces, including shelving, windowsills and railings are solid oak; taken from the property and reused.
"Schweiss doors are very nice and always create a conversation with visitors. They leave me open space inside my workshop and showroom and even though they are industrial looking from the inside, the look is acceptable and exactly the theme I had hoped to project for the inside of my showroom. The price and installation challenges are far outweighed by the look and utility of the final product."
- Tom Struthers
Winnipeg, Canada
The wrap-around decking and front courtyard are all structural concrete with a long concrete driveway leading to the house on a well-treed lot. The house is all wheelchair access and there are no front steps; just a sloped courtyard leading to a huge pivot door main entrance.
Struthers is an old British car aficionado. He belongs to the Triumph Drivers Club of Manitoba; the Austin Healey Club of Manitoba; the Triumph Stag Club of America and the Triumph Wedge Club of America. Among his collection are four Triumphs dating from 1960 to 1981; a 1953 Jaguar XK120 and a 1953 Austin Healey BNI, all drivable. He is currently doing a concours restoration on an early Austin Healey BN1 Cornet cream car to commemorate the queen's 1953 coronation.
His three garages all have Schweiss bifold liftstrap doors on them with photo eye sensors, multi-channel remotes and automatic latching systems. The largest of the bifold garage doors is 10' x 10' and the other two are each 8' x 8'. Attractive exterior vertical pine tongue and groove cladding on all the doors really gives them an appealing appearance. Struthers said he found the Schweiss doors on the Internet and bought them directly from the factory, noting the delivery was really good and the package was complete and easy.
Vertical pine tongue and groove cladding on all three of Struthers garage doors give the them an elegant look, as does this 1953 Jaguar XK120.
"Jeff Peters and I did the installation of all three doors. The doors fit perfectly and were easy to install - the Schweiss website is complete and informative. It is important to have a strong superstructure to mount the doors on because they are heavy. Concrete walls and lots of rebar in the header made for a strong permanent mount."

It is important to have a strong superstructure to mount the doors on because they are heavy. Concrete walls and lots of rebar in the header made for a strong permanent mount," said Struthers.
Struthers noted that after the doors were wired and adjusted they worked perfectly and have done so through hot summer and extremely cold winter months.

The 10 ft. height and width of this bifold showroom garage door gives Struthers plenty of headroom to spare. All of his doors are equipped with remote openers and photo eye sensors.
Struthers said his bifold doors have performed perfectly in the cold of winter and the heat of summer.
Tom Struthers has a 1,000 sq. ft. showroom for his classic cars and an 800 sq. ft. shop where he can work on them. Here is an early interior photo showing a few of his cars and two of the Schweiss bifold 8 ft. x 8 ft. doors. His shop door is 10 ft. x 10 ft.
