“We are increasingly using big overhead doors because with the climate in our area people really like to be able to open up a cafeteria or school space adjacent to an outdoor space. On this particular project we used Schweiss because we felt the straps would be more reliable from a maintenance standpoint in the long run. We looked at two other door manufacturers but liked these doors because they actually have fairly minimal equipment on the siderails. A lot of the other products seem to have counterweights, electrical equipment, guards and such. One of the nice things about Schweiss Doors is that we were able to work with you to do some custom work on the things that had to be there.”

The attractive cladding design on the doors consists of laser-cut stainless steel panels that really make the kiosk and doors stand out.
Many times you will find Schweiss doors located in high pedestrian traffic areas where establishments are open to serve the public attending various functions. Such is the case with the Bi-Rite Cafe sandwich and ice cream kiosk located adjacent to the San Francisco Civic Center and mayor's office and Helen Diller Civic Center Playgrounds near Market Street and Van Ness Avenue that contains many of the city's largest government and cultural institutions.
The San Francisco Civic Center is distinguished by its many beaux arts-style government buildings and performing arts venues. City Hall, a sprawling 1915 landmark with a gold-leafed dome, anchors a complex that includes the elegant War Memorial Opera House, the Asian Art Museum and a large plaza. Entertainment seekers choose from plays at historic theaters and concerts at sleek spots such as Davis Symphony Hall and the SFJazz Center.
As a significant part of a large city revitalization effort the 640 sq. ft. Bi-Rite Cafe kiosk offers the first time food has been made available on the Civic Center Plaza. It has five beautiful Schweiss bifold designer liftstrap doors that open up on all sides and when they are closed they blend into the building design to where you can't really see that there are doors there at all.
The attractive cladding design on the doors consists of laser-cut stainless steel panels that really make the kiosk and doors stand out. WRNS Studio of San Francisco was the architectural firm that designed the cafe kiosk and recommended Schweiss bifold doors.
"We worked with Zahner, based in Kansas City who fabricated the panels using our custom perforation design, which was inspired by some of the other metal work at the Civic Center; mostly what you see on City Hall. It's a modern reinterpretation of these historic patterns," said WRNS Studio Architect, Hattie Stroud.
Zahner's engraved and etched inventive use of metal processes provide a canvas of possibility for expression on plate and panel surfaces worldwide.
The doors remain open during business hours and then can be locked shut with an automatic latching system to protect its contents when not in operation. The largest door is 49.4' x 12' and the four other liftstrap doors vary in size from 16.8' to 12.11' in width. They have weatherproof electrical and stainless steel windrails.
“The install went great and everything on these doors went swimmingly. We worked with Dave, Brent and Paul at Schweiss Doors who were willing to take numerous phone calls from me no matter how complicated the questions were. They were all very helpful. Customer service from Schweiss was very good, I'm happy to say. I like the actual fabrication of the doors, shop drawings and the wiring diagrams were very good quality. Overall, these attractive doors give you the ability to put any type of cladding on them. It is a neat door with a wide opening surface.”

Bi-Rite Cafe is a fun, lively outdoor gathering space where anyone can relax, with the historic and picturesque City Hall as a backdrop. The menu offers breakfast and lunch all day and includes healthy, kid-friendly options. They also have Bi-Rite Creamery soft serve ice cream made with Double 8 Dairy water buffalo milk and a full espresso bar and coffee program featuring Sightglass Coffee.
"I think the owners were happy with the doors. We are increasingly using big overhead doors because with the climate in our area people really like to be able to open up a cafeteria or school space adjacent to an outdoor space. One of the nice things about Schweiss Doors is that we were able to work with you to do some custom work on the things that had to be there. It worked pretty well on the installation," said Stroud.
The kiosk differs from some of the very prestigious nationwide projects WRNS Studio Architects is known for.
"We do a lot of bigger work, but a lot of the things we really care about are these small projects we do for the city because we live here and use these spaces too and we want to see them doing well. It's work we are really passionate about. There was a really committed team of people working on it, not just from our office, but also from Rec & Parks, Trust for Public Land, Roebbelen, Bi-Rite and a bunch of different agencies in the city. Everybody really had the best interest of the project in mind and were behind making this happen; it was a great thing to work on," added Stroud.
The contractor assigned to building the kiosk was Roebbelen Contracting of El Dorado Hills, Calif. Nick Tisell, a Superintendent for the company said he was impressed with the doors and customer service from Schweiss Doors.
"The install went great and everything on these doors went swimmingly. We worked with Dave, Brent and Paul at Schweiss Doors who were willing to take numerous phone calls from me no matter how complicated the questions were. They were all very helpful. Customer service from Schweiss was very good, I'm happy to say," said Tisell. "I like the actual fabrication of the doors, shop drawings and the wiring diagrams were very good quality. Overall, these attractive doors give you the ability to put any type of cladding on them. It is a neat door with a wide opening surface."
Installation of the bifold doors was done by ABS Builders, Inc., a General Contractor from Maxwell, Calif., the same firm that installed the five large doors on the new Kings Stadium Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
This side view of the 49' door in the closed position shows how it guards the kiosk cafe, at right, from vandalism or unwanted visitors.
The ornate laser-cut design on the aluminum 2" thick panels really dresses up the doors and when open give a nice shaded canopy for customers to stand under placing their orders.
Since their founding in 2005, WRNS Studio has cultivated a design-forward practice amidst continued, sometimes rapid growth-in 2017 they opened a fourth office, expanding from San Francisco, New York, and Honolulu to Seattle. To guide them through this growth, they identified three ideals to which WRNS Studio strives in every project: beauty, sustainability, and a positive contribution to the public realm. It is the relentless pursuit of these ideals, carried out over a diversity of project types, scales, and contexts that account for a large part of their success.
It is their people that truly make WRNS Studio excellent. They've learned from working with some of the world's most transformative organizations that the most important thing they can do is to attract, cultivate, and nurture talented people who share their values. At all experience levels, their people are leading the critical discourse-teaching, writing, advocating for equity, and advancing sustainable practice, to name a few.
Likewise, the culture at WRNS is strong and distinct, with interests focused on craft, technology, education, and pro-bono work. They have a thriving scholarship program that promotes inspiration and critical thinking in design and architecture, with topics ranging from rammed earth construction to Robert Irwin's explorations of light and space.
An informal mentorship program complements their scholarship program with construction site visits, technology workshops, and licensure advising. With several career-long educators at the helm, their work is bracketed by a vigorous culture of education, linking academia with practice to advance architectural excellence.
WRNS Studio has headquarters in California, and is one of less than 26 architecture firms nationwide to achieve the International Living Futures Institute's JUST Label. WRNS Studio was named Top Firm in Architect magazine's 2018 Architect 50, becoming only the second firm to earn the number one overall ranking twice.
