Iowa high school aviation academy has a Schweiss hydraulic door on its new hangar

Schweiss hydraulic hangar door opens wide

The Schweiss hydraulic hangar door opens wide for this Learjet and many other aircraft to enter the Aviation Technology Academy in Des Moines, Iowa. The door is 58.2' x 19.5' and is equipped with photo eye sensors, wind pins, warning lights and horns.

Large aircraft were recently moved down public streets from the Des Moines Airport to the Des Moines Aviation Academy's new facility. The academy, which got its start back in 1943, has graduated around 1,500 students or more since then. It consists of an off-site building from the high school with a main hangar, mechanical shop, tool/equipment rooms, four classrooms and office space.

The district's FAA-approved aviation program began classes in the brand-new facility following the passage of a $3.5 million referendum. The district had operated one of the nation's only three high school aviation programs from a hangar at the Des Moines Airport. However, the district lost its lease there, and was faced with the option of either eliminating the program, or building its own hangar.

Their new 100' x 96' hangar has a 58.2' x 19.5' Schweiss hydraulic door equipped with electric photo eye sensors, manual windpins, warning lights and horns. The facility consists of a main hangar, mechanical shop, tool/equipment rooms, classrooms and office space. Building contractor on the school was DDVI of Indianola, Iowa. The door was installed by Skold Door Company of Des Moines.

“I said these guys don't have engineers that know what they are doing; maybe at one time they did, but they don't now. I said you guys are probably another $6,000 above and if you screw this door bid up it will cost you 10 times over to fix it. Then I had Schweiss Doors run it through for us and they doubled the strength of what we originally had. Within two weeks we had a shop drawing from Schweiss and by the time the project was ready Schweiss had their door in place.”

"There's been 100 percent support to keep this program alive," said Tim Harmer, an aviation technology instructor with the program. "With the new facility, we'll be able to accommodate up to 120 students or more, because it's larger. We are also able to store more aircraft. And we've expanded the pilot-side of the program as well by adding Redbird fully enclosed MCX and MX2 flight simulators."

The academy has a hangar full of aircraft that include a Bell "Huey" AH-1 Cobra helicopter, OH58 Jet Ranger Helicopter, Learjet Model 35A, Mitsubishi MU2 twin-engine turboprop, a Stinson and Cessna 172RG and a Cessna 310.

The program is divided up into four categories: general, airframe, power plant and pilot training. The program is offered to adults and students from other school districts that are interested in aviation.

Harmer is a certified flight instructor who is a former emergency medical service helicopter and commercial pilot and mechanic who has been teaching there for the past four years. He was fulltime National Guard in Iowa for 16 years. He is assisted at times with up to four other instructors who can be called in to teach aircraft airframe mechanics and ground school.

"We produce federally licensed graduates in a program that starts in 10th grade. Being that all the classes here are federal level and also college credits, all the high school students get college credits as well as federal recognition in order to get their aircraft mechanics license. Because of that, it also has to be open to adults; our oldest student is 71. Next year we will open the program up to ninth-graders as well. It doesn't cost veterans a dime to come here and some of our students have gone on to join the military," noted Harmer.

Iowa Academy Hangar is full of airplanes

The academy has a hangar full of aircraft that include a Bell "Huey" AH-1 Cobra helicopter, OH58 Jet Ranger Helicopter, Learjet Model 35A, Mitsubishi MU2 twin-engine turboprop, a Stinson and Cessna 172RG and a Cessna 310.

Up until now, the program was heavily focused on the mechanical side of operating aircraft. The aircraft are all flyable, but will never actually take off, Harmer says they are kept in flying condition for the students' learning benefit.

Harmer stressed that it's important to keep the district's aviation program alive because it gives students who don't wish to pursue a typical four-year collegiate career after high school the chance to prepare for a career in technical work. In addition to their high school credits, students (in the pilot class) can earn up to 44 college credits, up to 72 hours in the flight simulator and potentially save at least $7,000 of education expenses. This can amount to three-fourths of their associates degree and A&P Mechanics License done before they graduate high school.

"With the amount of job opportunities out there for pilots and mechanics, it's a great venue for people who like piloting or like the mechanics, to not go down the collegiate level after high school and jump right into a career," Harmer said.

It was a visit to Indian Hills Community College where Mark Thiessen, Principal Architect at Angelo Architectural in Urbandale assigned to the design work at the academy got introduced to Schweiss Doors. The college there ordered a 58' x 16.7' bifold door in 2008 for their maintenance hangar, but Harmer and Thiessen leaned more towards getting a one-piece hydraulic door.

"I've known about Schweiss Doors after being around general aviation for 30 years. I like the simplicity and quiet of the hydraulic door. Depending on the time of year we leave it open at times," said Harmer.

The project originally involved another door manufacturer that failed to deliver what was needed. To begin with they were given shop drawings that showed quarter inch angle size tubes on the side of the door. An engineer surmised that it wouldn't allow the door to be opened. With only two months out on project completion and without a shop drawing they were guaranteed from someone out in California they would have an engineer drawing in a day or two. They sent some other stuff that also failed to outline what the architects needed. Finally the general contractor and architect conducted a conference call with the door engineers.

"I said these guys don't have engineers that know what they are doing; maybe at one time they did, but they don't now. I said you guys are probably another $6,000 above and if you screw this door bid up it will cost you 10 times over to fix it. Then I had Schweiss Doors run it through for us and they doubled the strength of what we originally had. Within two weeks we had a shop drawing from Schweiss and by the time the project was ready Schweiss had their door in place," said Thiessen.

The Des Moines Aviation Technology program is only one of two federal programs that allow high school students to earn certifications in the United States. It offers students the opportunity to become FAA-certified mechanics as well as earn an associate degree from Indian Hills Community College.

Tim Harmer said the program currently has 72 students and eight adults. Out of 72 students two are girls. "We have also become the Women in Aviation Chapter for Iowa. It gives exposure to people in the community of aviation and scholarships available to women," Harmer said.

Students can start off in ninth grade in the Discovery program. Then they get to decide and figure out do they want to go down the track of being a mechanic or down the track of being a pilot. Currently there is an equal divide when it comes to students wanting to go into the mechanics side of the industry or pursuing being a licensed pilot.

Angelo Architectural Associates

Angelo Architectural Associates was founded in 2003 by Mark Thiessen. Thiessen has 39 years of Architecture experience and 26 years as a licensed Architect in Iowa and Minnesota working in a broad range of architectural building types including schools, churches, office buildings, police and fire stations, assisted living facilities, multi-family and residential single family homes.

As a young man Thiessen worked for his father's contracting business. His father's expertise helped him understand how to construct buildings and stressed the importance of quality structures that endure. This influence stayed with Mark as a fundamental element of his design philosophy. As he began to study architecture, Thiessen worked as a draftsman for a stone quarry, detailing stone for buildings all over the world. His childhood experience and stone quarry experience led Mark to complete his collegiate career with a thesis on the "Influences of Stone in Architecture".

His thesis study led to his theory that great architecture must not only have good aesthetic design qualities, but must also be built to withstand the effects of time and nature. Great design, with long-lasting, durable construction, is the foundation for excellent architecture.

The firm believes that all projects are an opportunity for architectural excellence regardless of scope or budget. They embrace the challenges of each project and provide creative solutions that will meet and surpass all expectations.

Angelo is committed to collaborative design, working with clients to provide rich, dynamic architectural spaces and environments constructed with sound detailing. We strive to provide the client a structure that will endure with grace and elegance through time and will enrich its users.
