Mike and Jayne Koskovich's Wasilla hangar home is a popular gathering place and bed and breakfast location for friends and tourists to Alaska. Here, wedding vows are being taken on the lawn before retreating into the hangar for the reception.
A few friends and neighbors stand in front of the hangar during the spring fly-in. Here is a view of the hangar house from the lake on fly-in day.
Mike Koskovich and his wife, Jayne, are like many Alaskans
- they came from somewhere else in the Lower 48.
"My wife and I are both from Shakopee, Minnesota, and came to Alaska in 1974 to explore the unknown and seize upon job opportunities that existed here," said Mike.
"I have been a pilot my whole adult life, becoming licensed at age 18 with a private and multi-engine rating. Then after a four-year hitch in the U.S. Army with tours in Vietnam and Germany, I finished my commercial instrument and flight instructor ratings."
He and his wife run their business of Flysafe B&B Airventures located on Seymour Lake about nine miles west of Wasilla. It's about 60 road miles north from Anchorage International Airport.
"When we have Bed and Breakfast guests, I more often than not will take them for a flight seeing airplane ride. I also take people fishing at our remote fly-in cabin on Trapper Lake, which is a very good lake for Northern Pike," said Koskovich.
“Having been in the aviation business for many years, it is my opinion that Schweiss doors are simply the standard of the industry. Simplicity and reliability are huge factors to me. Our door has worked without a hitch for about 10 years. I believe the construction of the door is very solid, it seals well, and I would and have recommended Schweiss doors to many local folks that are building hangars.”
- Mike Koskovich
Wasilla, Alaska
They built a hangar home in 2005. The hangar is 60'x60' with a small alcove that is designed around the tail of a Cessna 185 as far as vertical and horizontal dimension. It has room for three Cessna Skywagon aircraft in the hangar in addition to two pickup trucks, a few motorcycles and a bunch of other stuff.
"Having been in the aviation business for many years, it is my opinion that Schweiss doors are simply the standard of the industry," noted Koskovich. "Simplicity and reliability are huge factors to me. Our door has worked without a hitch for about 10 years. I believe the construction of the door is very solid, it seals well, and I would and I have recommended Schweiss doors to many local folks that are building hangars."
He currently has a 1966 Cessna 180H on big tires; a 1975 Cessna A185F on Aerocet floats in the summer and Landes Hydraulic Wheel Skis in winter; and a 1964 PA-30 Turbo Twin Comanche. He currently has a 1966 Cessna 180H on big tires; a 1975 Cessna A185F on Aerocet floats in the summer and Landes Hydraulic Wheel Skis in winter; and a 1964 PA-30 Turbo Twin Comanche.
"We do a lot of trips around South Central Alaska to various different fishing spots to favorite scenic hiking and picnic spots and on occasion long cross-country trips. The 180 has been to the Lower 48 states many times; down to the West Coast Grand Canyon in Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, the Wisconsin Oshkosh airshow and bike rally at Sturgis, S.D. The Twin Comanche I recently acquired will do the same and much more," noted Koskovich.
The Koskovich 60'x60' hangar facing Seymour Lake is big enough for special occasions with seating for 90 with the 50 ft. Schweiss bifold door open.
In the summer months Koskovich said he opens his Schweiss bifold door daily. In times of inclement weather and during the winter he only opens it when he needs to. He actually flies more in the winter than in summer, providing air support for long distant sled dog activity such as the Iditarod, for more than 20 years, and more recently the Irondog snowmachine race from Anchorage to Nome to Fairbanks.
They have had their hangar house bed and breakfast for about 10 years. The bed and breakfast is small, with two guest rooms; cots in the hangar are used for overflow. The hangar has its own dedicated full bath/shower and overlooks a very nice front yard with a fire pit and nice view of the lake. A paddleboat, a small skiff with motor and a pontoon boat make for nice evening cruises on the lake.
"We have had guests from Europe and Australia as well as from all over the U.S. We treat them all like celebrities; however, one of my personal favorites was a family of six. A mother with a two-month-old infant, that the day prior to arriving had run the grueling Seward Mount Marathon Fourth of July race. Their other children ranged in age from about three years to 13 years of age and the husband, one of the nicest people I've ever met, had recently retired after 16 years as a Navy Seal." And then there are fly-ins. Flysafe B&B Airventures for the past eight years has hosted a springtime on the ice fly-in hangar party.
The bifold lift-strap door has four double pane slider windows with screens, and one man-door for easy year-round access. It is big enough to hold three Skywagons, two pickups, motorcycles and other stuff.
"It has become almost, not even arguably the premier general aviation outdoor gathering in South Central Alaska. As many as 64 airplanes are parked on the frozen lake ice and upwards of 200 people enjoy live music and a huge potluck spread of food in the hangar. The Aviation Trade Fair put on by Alaska Airmen Association is much bigger, but it is held in the FedEx hangar, and the Valdez fly-in, which occurs in May is at the Valdez airport," added Koskovich.
Flysafe B&B Airventures is located at 3120 North Alma Drive, Wasilla, Alaska Mike and Jayne can be reached by calling 907-376-3465 or by email at: flysafe@mtaonline.net

There aren't many airports in the U.S. or abroad that have as many Schweiss Bifold Liftstrap/Autolatch hangar doors as the Oshawa, Ontario, Canada airport. In a three-phase project a total of 80 Schweiss liftstrap and autolatch bifold doors have been put onto hangars there. In just the last order alone, 34 Schweiss bifold doors ranging in size from 41.5 ft wide to 47 ft. wide gives some solid proof of their popularity among hangar owners there. |
