Southern California Institute of Architecture selects bifold glass doors for new building
Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles called on Schweiss Doors for two very impressive glass bifold liftstrap doors to be put on its new building. One door operates as a roof located skylight and the other an entrance door.
SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, California, is an independent, non-profit school offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture. It offers community design and outreach programs, and free public access to frequent exhibitions and lectures by leading thinkers in architecture. Founded in 1972, SCI-Arc is widely regarded as one of the most avant-garde U.S. architecture schools, with a reputation for pushing the boundaries of academic study.
SCI-Arc's approximately 500 students and 80 faculty members - some of whom are practicing architects - work together to explore and test the limits of architecture. The school is based in the former Santa Fe Freight Depot in the Arts District in downtown Los Angeles. Today the building is on the National Register of Historic Places and the school has become an anchor for the city's Arts District.
The firm of AGA architects was in charge of the building design that included two Schweiss bifold/liftstrap glass designer doors. The doors are 19' 1" x 9' wide and 16' 1" x 8.6' wide. Each door is equipped with autolatches, and electric photo eye sensors. Special engineering was required in order to have the pitch of the door at a greater slope of 1/2" per foot to match the roofline. The doors were ordered through Certified Door & Dock Equipment of Bellflower, California, who was also in charge of the door installation. Bremco Construction Company of Long Beach, California was the general contractor.
John Chamberland, Operations Manager for Certified Door & Dock Equipment that installed the doors, said it was his decision for SCI-Arc to go with Schweiss Doors. An Internet search brought him initially to Schweiss. It was a first for his company to install Schweiss doors and he mentioned the biggest issue presented was with the flashing and sealing the skylight application. He added that the doors were delivered on time and in good condition and noted the quality of the doors.
Lead AGA architect John Bencher and one other assistant's participation and experience extended through all phases of the SCI-Arc project design, development, production and construction.
An inside view of both doors: The entrance door with steps leading down to it is 19'1" x 9' wide. The skylight door is 16'1" x 8'6" wide. The new building is being used as a digital prototyping lab for students, shop staff and equipment storage.
"Obviously, we collaborated with the school in terms of design. When it came time to do the nuts and bolts; construction drawings, permitting, engineering, coordination and all of that, they decided to work with us. We have a relationship with the school anyway, because I used to teach there," said Bencher.
The new building is being used as a digital prototyping lab, mostly for equipment and shop staff. The students themselves don't spend their entire day there on regular basis. The building has equipment in it that they use to build 3D prototype models. It's got 3D powder printers, 3D scanners and other machines. Students come in with their digital files to build 3D prototypes of their work.
"We used two Schweiss doors, one was a conventional door in the vertical orientation; that was primarily so when it is open we would have a big connection between the new building and the existing shop where some of this equipment used to be. The analog shop still has conventional saws, table saws, band saws and traditional equipment that is still at the end of the building. The idea behind the Schweiss door is to move back and forth between the two shops easily and quickly as if it were one space," explained Bencher.
One of the glass doors is at the entrance connecting to the new building and the existing shop. Directly over the top of that door they used the second bifold door as a skylight that can be opened up for natural light and occasional ventilation purposes.
Bencher said they looked at a couple of other manufacturers of bifold doors in addition to Schweiss Doors before deciding that Schweiss would be the best choice. They first became acquainted with Schweiss Doors while working on another project prior to this.

"The bifold door made more sense than a single hydraulic door for us. One factor was that there was more information available on the Schweiss door to help us understand how it would integrate into the building. The other part was, after talking with Schweiss personnel, you seemed more willing to take on the challenge of it, since it was more of an unconventional installation. We looked at the Schweiss website and visited with Brent (at Schweiss Doors) and he provided AutoCAD drawings and more specific information. The doors have lived up to our expectations and were a good fit for the building."

"The bifold door made more sense than a single hydraulic door for us," said Bencher. "One factor was that there was more information available on the Schweiss door to help us understand how it would integrate into the building.
One of the differences from the first standard vertical bifold door was evident in the bifold skylight door that is positioned at more of a horizontal level above the other door and where the pitch of the door was set at a greater slope of 1/2" per foot to match the roof.
Bencher has worked collaboratively with Augis Gedgaudas since 1996, and in 2002 joined AGA architects as partner. He has 15 years of experience in the design of unique buildings, interiors and parking facilities for office, commercial and industrial clients including several built-to-suit production /post-production facilities for movie and television companies, and creative spaces for website and internet design companies and other clients in the entertainment industry. Bencher has also been a design studio critic in the architecture departments at Woodbury University in Burbank, California and the Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, California.
He seeks to maintain his architectural interests by participating in the academic environment and is currently an adjunct professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture teaching classes in design, theory, design development, and construction documentation and process.
The skylight bifold door also has automatic latching capability. It provides natural light into the building and is occasionally opened for ventilation.
History Of SCI-Arc
SCI-Arc was founded in 1972 in Santa Monica by a group of faculty and students from Department of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, who wanted to approach the subject from a more experimental perspective than traditional schools offered.
Originally called the New School, SCI-Arc was based on the concept of a "college without walls" and it remains one of the few independent architecture schools in the world.
The school had been based in three locations - the first an industrial building in Santa Monica and the second an industrial building in Marina del Rey. In 2000, it moved to its current home at the Santa Fe Freight Depot in the Arts District in downtown Los Angeles.
SCI-Arc attracts students from nearby and throughout the world in pursuit of the educational programs that the school offers. Most students have already completed some college level work; some already hold professional architectural degrees. The school is ranked as one of the top five best architecture schools in the world.
Beginning in fall 2016, SCI-Arc EDGE, Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture will offer four graduate degree programs in fields including architectural technologies, fiction and entertainment, design of cities, and design theory and pedagogy, along with two fellowships in synthetic landscapes. SCI-Arc EDGE is intended to serve as a platform for multiple postgraduate programs following the think-tank model-with programs intended to crossbreed and inform each other and provide a space where new conversations take place. SCI-Arc is located at 960 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013

AGA architects was formed in 1996 with the goal of providing imaginative architectural solutions within the economic and developmental constraints of all clients. The firm believes that all projects benefit from a process involving the client, architect, builder and other specialists in an informative collaboration, and that successful projects are made possible through the management of all participants involved.
The partners at AGA architects have over 30 years of experience working on complex projects ranging from office buildings and interiors, industrial and technical buildings to private residences. Through this experience, the firm has developed a sophisticated and thorough approach to design, technical development, code analysis, and document production.
The partners at AGA architects come from backgrounds rooted in the discourse of architectural theory, philosophy and history, and they extend the architectural practice through teaching at various architectural schools in the Los Angeles area.
AGA has over the years developed a reputation for being proficient in the preliminary phases of design, code research and program analysis, in the creation of technical documents and in the effective management of the construction administration process.
AGA Architects is located at 4040 Del Rey Ave. Suite 7a, Marina Del Rey, CA. 90292, Phone: (310)823-4901.
