Big bifold glass door connects spaces at new Red Bull headquarters

Extreme sports enthusiasts are a key demographic for energy drink makers, and Red Bull's new North American headquarters in Santa Monica, CA was created with that audience in mind. Among the 105,000 sq. ft. buildings many impressive design features are 40' wide by 250' long, non-functioning skateboard platform and 28' tall by 40' wide, Schweiss glass-paneled bifold door.

HIW International of Santa Monica was responsible for turning an existing 1950s-era brick building into Red Bull's edgy new digs. Inner Space Construction of Rancho Dominguez. CA, carried out those modifications with the most significant being the removal of a large section of roof to create a giant courtyard. It is there the ramp which has offices and conferences room beneath is located.

"The huge skateboard ramp acts as a spine and disperses space and activities throughout the building." explained Yi Shen, project architect. "It's also the strongest visual element of the project."

To effectively make what happens around the ramp a part of what happens inside the building too, HIW separated the two spaces with a glass Schweiss Bifold door by Schweiss Doors of Fairfax, MN.

When the bifold door is completely opened it draws attention to the skateboard ramp.

"We looked at other projects in Santa Monica which have this type of bifold door as a major design element and we loved the concept," said Shen. "We then did some research and felt the Schweiss bifold was the most appropriate option."

The Schweiss door features glass panels attached to its metal frame using structural silicon fastening. The frame weighs 6,000 lbs. and the glass another 14,000 lbs., bringing the total weight of the door to approximately 10 tons. To raise and lower it required the use of two electric motors and eight liftstraps.

The Schweiss Designer Bifold door is extremely attractive when the lights come on.

"I've installed nearly 300 Schweiss bifolds, mostly on hangars across California, Nevada and Oregon," said the company's Bill Schmidt. "It's nice working with a glass specialist when it comes to the special task of fastening glass panels to the metal frame."

Inner Space's Gary Schamer is among those who like the way the project turned out. "I'm very pleased with the final results and the Red Bull people absolutely love it," he said. He credits Schweiss for its role in making the project a success. "You can tell by the welding, the engineering design and the precision fit that Schweiss is an outfit that pays attention to detail. They're an awesome manufacturer."

Shen was impressed as well. "Quality shop drawings are important to we architects. Plus we appreciate quick access to key technical people. Schweiss provided us with high-quality work, not only in the final product, but in the process as well."
