Ray Fowler is a man of the sky
                 . . . and he's seen a lot of it

Fowler buys Schweiss Door

Fowler plays the "Hollywood" moniker part quite well with his name tag and cool shades. He flew the B-17 Memphis Belle that was featured in the 1990 movie "Memphis Belle."

From a pilot's point of view Ray Fowler of Carrollton, Georgia has led a charmed life. You name it; he's probably flown it. Better known in National Guard ranks as Lt. Col. Ray "Hollywood" Fowler, he's been deployed on multiple combat tours in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq as a F-16 jet fighter pilot. He has gained numerous flight hours flying for Delta Airlines for over 20 years on the McDonnell Douglas MD-88 and Airbus 319, 320, and 321. He owns a Cessna 182 that he keeps in his hangar used for business and pleasure.

"I've been with Delta for nearly 22 years, but I've been flying since I was 16. I get to play on the weekends at airshows in a bunch of World War II airplanes," said Fowler. "On my latest trip I just flew the P-51D 'Old Crow' for Col. Bud Anderson's 100th birthday celebration in Auburn, California. I'm also still active with the Air National Guard flying F-16s and have been doing that for 23 years. I just enjoy flying airplanes, even when I fly for business, it's just for fun."

Schweiss Door customer, Ray Fowler, flys P-51

Like Father- Like Son. Ray shows his son, Joshua, 17, the cockpit of Bud Anderson's P-51 that he flew in WWII. Beginning at age 22, Anderson racked up 16 ΒΌ kills in Europe with Chuck Yeager as his wingman. Fowler flew the plane for Anderson - who will soon be celebrating his 101st birthday and was recently promoted to Brigadier General. Also, Joshua recently soloed in a Cessna 172.

As a commercial airline transport pilot, Fowler was recognized a few years ago with inclusion in the prestigious FAA Airmen Certification Database by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Fowler said he was introduced to Schweiss Doors at Oshkosh and has several friends that have hangar doors made by Schweiss.

"I did my due diligence and research and looked at others 'enemy' hangar doors and didn't have any interest in them; their quality wasn't anywhere close. I was really impressed, with not only the door but with Mike's (Schweiss) level of involvement. He was so helpful personally with my selection of a hangar door. I built a large hangar on a private airstrip with a really big Schweiss door. I just hit the button and get all misty-eyed - I love that door. I keep several friends airplanes on occasion in my hangar. No matter how big your hangar is everyone says they always want it to be bigger. I would have probably made it bigger if it would have fit on my lot."

His new 80 ft. x 80 ft. hangar has a 65 ft. x 22 ft. Schweiss bifold liftstrap door with automatic latches. His local Vulcan steel hangar contractor had previous experience installing Schweiss doors and also did it for him.

“ I like both styles of doors but prefer the bifold liftstrap door because of my limited ramp area; the bifold was the best option for me. The hydraulic door overhang is nice when it's raining, but the bifold swings out pretty far. There's nothing I like best about my door; I like everything. I like the smooth way it runs up and down and the reliability of the door and straps. My old door that I used to lease had cables - those things were always creaking. I stood far, far away from it, it wasn't a Schweiss door and I didn't trust it. ”

"My door has the new inside insulation; it is just beautiful, it looks so nice. If I build another hangar, I know what kind of door I am going to put on it," added Fowler.

He said everyone he worked with at Schweiss Doors was very helpful and said he will be a big proponent for people wanting to put Schweiss doors on their hangars from now on.

"To most people the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home." That quotation probably wasn't written with Ray Fowler in mind, but it pretty much suits him to a tee.

Schweiss Doors customer, Ray, tours WWII airplanes

Ray Fowler, as Director of Operations for the Liberty Foundation, has toured WWII airplanes across the country giving rides in a North American B-25 "Mitchell" and a Douglas C-47. They are currently restoring their Boeing B-17 Liberty Belle" Flying Fortress shown here flying below the B-17 Memphis Belle that was featured in the 1990 movie "Memphis Belle."

Ray Fowler and the Memphis Belle Flying Fortress

Ray Fowler is in a tight-knit community of Americans who fly restored military aircraft. He's been behind the controls of warbirds such as the P-51, P-40, P-47, Corsair, P-38, B-25, the B-17 Flying Fortress and even a German Focke Wulf Fw-190 and ME-109.

Fowler is a "flying machine," in fact he serves as the Director of Flight Operations for the Liberty Foundation, but his "real job is flying as an airline pilot, as well as an F-16 pilot in the Air National Guard, but his passion is WWII aviation history. Fowler has been deployed on multiple combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. The Liberty Foundation, Inc. is a 501 (c) Non-Profit Flying Museum whose mission is to keep the B-17 Flying Fortress and other warbirds out on tour.

“ I did my due diligence and research and looked at others 'enemy' hangar doors and didn't have any interest in them; their quality wasn't anywhere close. Carrollton, Georgia

"I am fortunate to fly for several warbird organizations and private owners such as the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. I have over 20,000 hours of flight time and quite a lot of experience in the B-17 Flying Fortress and have been fortunate to fly a fair amount of time with the P-51 Mustang, P-40, and the F-4U Corsair," said Fowler.

Fowler has been with the foundation since 2004 and has flown about half of the flyable B-17s including the Liberty Belle, the movie "Memphis Belle" and "Ye Olde Pub."

In June of 2011, the Liberty Belle was almost completely lost due to a fire that consumed much of the fuselage. The Liberty Foundation, with the help of Fowler, went on a mission to raise $3 million to have it restored and flyable. Prior to the mishap, there were only 13 flyable B-17s worldwide out of 12,732 produced during wartime, during which time 4,735 were lost in combat. Before the fire, The Liberty Belle had flown over 20,000 passengers, given hundreds of thousands of ground tours and has been seen by millions worldwide; many of whom flew in B-17s during war time. While the Liberty Belle is being restored, the foundation has had the opportunity to fly two of the more notable B-17s, the F-model B-17 in the movie "Memphis Belle" that was seen in the 1990 movie of the famous story of the B-17 Memphis Belle: and "Ye Olde Pub" from the famous book "A Higher Call."

According to the foundation, more than $1.5 million is spent annually to keep the B-17 airworthy and on tour and to keep up with expenses that are about $4,500 per flight hour. Just the fuel use alone is 200 gallons per hour amounting to almost $1,400. Those who can't shell out $450 for a 30-minute flight can still take free ground tours of the well-kept aircraft.

During the war, B-17s dropped 640,036 tons of bombs on European targets in daylight raids. Most B-17s flying today were built toward the end of. World War II and never saw combat, but they bear the colors and nose art of aircraft that flew in combat. The first B-17 to complete 25 missions over Germany with the 8th Air Force was the "Memphis Belle." The original "Memphis Belle" is being restored at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near Dayton, Ohio and likely won't be flown again.

Ye Olde Pub flown by Ray Fowler

In a historic bombing run, Charlie Brown and his crew in the "Ye Olde Pub," were fortunate to meet a German fighter pilot who decided to let them live.

"Ye Olde Pub" B-17F Flying Fortress flies again

Ray Fowler can add the historic "Ye Olde Pub" B-17F Flying Fortress to his long list of aircraft that very few people get to pilot. One of the classic stories of World War II involved this aircraft commandeered by pilot Charlie Brown on December 20, 1943.

Brown's crew was assigned to fly "Purple Heart Corner," a spot on the edge of the formation that was considered especially dangerous because the Germans targeted the edges. However, since three bombers had to turn back because of mechanical problem, Brown was told to move to the front of the formation.

Returning from a successful bombing run on an aircraft production facility in Bremen, the B-17 on its first mission was severely damaged by German fighters. Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler had the opportunity to shoot down the crippled bomber but did not do so, and instead escorted it over and past German-occupied territory so as to protect it.

Before the bomber released its bomb load, accurate flak coming from more than 250 flak guns shattered the Plexiglas nose, knocked out the #2 and #3 engines and damaged the #4 engine resulting in about 40 percent of its total power. Unable to remain with his formation Brown fell back as a straggler, a position from which he came under sustained enemy attacks from over a dozen enemy fighters for more than 10 minutes.

Although many of the 10-man crew were wounded, and the tail gunner killed, Lt. Brown, wounded in his right shoulder, managed to fly the 250 miles across the North Sea and land his plane at RAF Seething, home of the 448th Bomb Group.

After an extensive search by Brown, the two pilots met each other 50 years later and developed a friendship that lasted until Stigler's death in 2008. Brown died only a few months later of the same year.

Ray Fowler flys XP-82

The XP-82 Twin Mustang has been a highly anticipated warbird restoration in recent memory. After 10 years and more than 1.5 million man-hours of work, it is now back in the air. A single cockpit P-38 Lightning is shown below.

Fowler pilots restored Twin Mustang XP-82

Ray Fowler's newest adventure was to test fly the unique restoration of the North American XP-82 Twin Mustang. The XP-82 you could say, is two P-51s with the inside wings taken off and then put together. It has been one of the most highly anticipated warbird restorations in recent years. After 10 years of perseverance and more than 1.5 million man-hours of work the Twin Mustang has been restored and is now back in the air.

Ray Fowler flys P-38

The P-38 Lightning incorporated a distinctive twin-boom design. The German Luftwaffe had nicknamed it the fork-tailed devil. The P-38 was used in various aerial combat roles, including as a highly effective fighter-bomber, night fighter and long-range escort. The P-38 accounted for 90 percent of the aerial film captured over Europe and was used most successfully in the Pacific Theatre by America's top aces. It was the only American fighter aircraft in large-scale production throughout the war. Only a few flyable models still exist.

The F-82 Twin Mustang was the last American piston-engine fighter ordered into production by the United States Air Force. During the Korean War, Japan-based F-82s were among the first USAF aircraft to operate over Korea. The first three North Korean aircraft destroyed by U.S. forces were shot down by F-82s.

This B-29 bomber is one of only two flyable in the world. It was used extensively during the last months of WWII to bomb Tokyo. Flying above it is the XP-82 Twin Mustang which was used for long range 20-hour flights with two pilots.

Salute to
Ray Fowler!

Invariably, nearly every time you see or meet Ray Fowler in person or in a photo you will notice a big smile on his face. Ray has led a storied and enviable military career that has spanned decades from his time in the military as a Second Lieutenant to his current rank of Lt. Colonel.

To put it simply, Ray is a multiple aircraft "flying machine," who also serves as Chief Pilot for the Liberty Foundation when he's not at his real job as an airline pilot, or as an F-16 pilot in the Air National Guard.

This summer, during the month of June, Ray will be flying a warbird at the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum "Greatest Generation" airshow in Granite Falls, Minnesota. Stop by and say "Hi,"

He's the type of guy, that when you thank him for "his service" dating back to multiple combat tours in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, it has true meaning for the service he gave to his country.

So, here's a high ranking salute and tribute to a great man, great father, and to a person who now ranks at the top of the list in our Schweiss Doors Hall of Fame!
