Pompano Beach Pilot automates his hangar as part of airpark expansion with 10-door bifold upgrade project

Arvid Albanese uses his five-place Eurocopter EC120B helicopter to fly between his hangars in Pompano Beach, Florida and North Carolina. To get it in and out of his hangars he has a remote-controlled landing dolly and ground transport platform that he can operate from inside his cockpit. (See video below)

It's not unusual for Schweiss Doors to receive multiple orders of doors going to one location. Such was the case that involved a recent 10-door shipment to Pompano Beach, Florida.

The insulated bifold liftstrap doors were all 58 ft. x 20.4 ft with bottom mount motors, automatic latch systems and walkdoors. They are engineered for 170 mph windload and mounted on new commercial construction rental and lease hangars at Pompano Beach Airpark located in the heart of the southeastern Gold Coast serving the general aviation needs of Broward County.

The Pompano Aviation 2 project involved four hangar buildings; two hangars had one door and two other buildings had four doors each. All these airpark doors were placed on new box hangars owned by the City of Pompano Beach.

The Pompano Aviation 2 project at Pompano Airpark involved building four new box hangars all equipped with walkdoors and 58 ft. x 20.4 ft. Schweiss bifold liftstrap autolatch doors that are windrated at 170 mph. Two hangars had four doors each and the remaining two hangars had one door each.

“We bid on a city parcel proposing what we would do. As a successful proposer, we planned our own strategy on what we would build there. We've seen Schweiss doors at airshows and considered using hydraulic one-piece Schweiss doors, but after interviewing some of our tenants, they actually preferred the bifold doors,” explained Greg Spatz, whose company, United States Construction Corporation in Pompano Beach, built the hangars.

All of the Albanese 60 ft. x 80 ft. hangars in Pompano Beach and those in North Carolina and have 58 ft. x 20.4 ft. bifold liftstrap and automatic latching Schweiss doors with walkdoors.

Aircraft housed in these hangars vary between commercial and private use. Two of the hangars were for American Flyers Airline Academy school and were set up for office/classroom use. There are jet brokers in three hangars and a helicopter maintenance facility in another.

“The hangar doors are smooth and quiet-operating compared to other doors that seem to be struggling to be picked up with their cables that are snapping or jumping around,” noted Spatz. “The Schweiss bifold doors are so smooth and don't even flinch when going up - no questions asked. I'm sure if we can make it work, on our next project we will use Schweiss. We are looking at another project that will need 100 ft. to 110 ft. doors.”

One of these 10 identical bifold doors were placed on the Florida rental/lease hangar that Arvid Albanese has moved into. In addition to the Florida hangar, Albanese also has a Schweiss bifold hangar at Avery County Airport in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. He has affectionately named his hangars “The Batcave” and the “Batcave South.” The straight-line distance from Spruce Pine, North Carolina to Pompano Beach is about a 680-mile commute.

“I first became acquainted with Schweiss Doors at the SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Expo, and then even more so when I bought a hangar in North Carolina that had a 54 ft. Schweiss bifold liftstrap door on it. I got to tell you; you wonder if you are going to be like a red-headed stepchild when you buy something used. Schweiss was phenomenal with the support they gave me on a door that somebody already had on this hangar. I felt like I was part of a family with you guys. I'm serious, you guys were unbelievable. Dave Schweiss spent a lot of time with me explaining how to rewire that remote-control door that wasn't initially rigged correctly by the previous owner,” explained Albanese.

One thing Albanese is particularly enamored with is his Heli-Wagon. It's a remote-controlled helicopter landing dolly and ground transport platform designed for mid-size skid helicopters that he can take-off and land his five-place Eurocopter EC120B helicopter from. When he takes to the air, he can remotely send the Heli-Wagon back into the hangar and vice versa. He ordered another Heli-Wagon for his Florida hangar.

Watch this video showing Arvid Albanese using his remote-controlled landing dolly and ground transport platform to get in and out of his hangar through his Schweiss Door!

Arvid Albanese's hangar in North Carolina filled with parked aircraft behind the Schweiss Door

Albanese's North Carolina hangar that he purchased from another pilot has a 54 ft. Schweiss bifold liftstrap door on it. Schweiss Doors helped him do some improvements on it.

“I have two young boys in the Boy Scouts, and I do an Aviation Day at Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport to teach the kids all about flying. When I flew in there, they put a Heli-Wagon out for me to land on. I'd never seen one of these before. As soon as I landed on it, it starts dragging me around . . . and I'm freaking out, what the hell is this!” exclaimed Albanese.

He surmised the Heli-Wagon was the coolest thing in the world to have so he ended up buying it, but he had no place to put it in a different common hangar he was using. So, what do you do? He decided to get a hangar for it, with remote control. He described this purchase as “The Tail Wagging the Dog.”

His other aircraft include a Pilatus PC-12, a new CubCrafter Carbon Cub FX3 taildragger and a Cessna 310 that he flies for Coast Guard missions. It has twin engines that allow him to fly 50 miles offshore.

The Pilatus PC-12 sits alongside Arvid's Eurocopter EC120B which can be seen sitting on a Heli-Wagon ready to be wheeled out. The Pilatus PC-12 is a pressurized single engine turbine-powered aircraft used by a large variety of operators.

His Carbon Cub FX3 aircraft was designed and produced by Cub Crafters of Yakima, Washington. It is a performing bush plane with 186 h.p. fuel-injected constant speed prop; an ideal bush plane designed for short takeoffs and landings fitted with tundra tires and a set of skis for winter use.

Albanese said his North Carolina 60 ft. x 60 ft. mancave hangar is all decked out to the point he could live there. It has an office, shower, kitchenette, washer & dryer and more. He said he could spruce up his new Florida hangar if he wanted to. It already has an office and is air-conditioned.

Albanese's North Carolina “Mancave” hangar is set up with all the conveniences of home including his office, kitchenette, laundry room and more.

One of Albanese's hangars, labeled Batcave with a name tag outside the door, with aircraft parked inside

Albanese placed name tags on his hangars - Batcave 1 in North Carolina and Batcave 2 in Florida.

He didn't have a choice between having a bifold or hydraulic door - both of his hangars already had Schweiss bifold liftstrap doors on them, and he was fine with that.

“I knew from looking at other doors at the airport and from looking at the Schweiss Doors website that Schweiss had automatic closures and all the automated mechanisms . . . it was really the way to go and having a push-button door opener made the whole Heli-Wagon experience work,” said Albanese. “The quality of engineering is simple, but it works. To have the top man of your door company bring me up to speed was incredible - I'm like a raving Santa for you guys now. It's one thing to have a good product, but it's another thing to have good service. I'm blown away by it,” expressed Albanese.

Greg Spatz seconds that emotion:

“Schweiss has been very supportive - the doors are great compared to some of the other doors here by a different manufacturer. When we had a problem with a couple of the motors, Schweiss stood behind them and replaced them. Their warranty service is the best that can be - you always have a number you can call; they always answer the phone 24/7. When our man was having problems with his first-time install, Dave Schweiss flew down twice from Minnesota and trained our people. We now have a customized door more engineered than we are used to and different from other parts of the country because of our 179 mph windloads - the door weighs 16,000 pounds and isn't going anywhere once it is closed,” said Spatz.

Albanese Group, LLC

Arvid Albanese, who is a mechanical contractor by trade, got to where he is today by building up his large Industrial Building Services air conditioning company in 1982 with offices throughout the southeast United States. He sold that business service company to Lennox National Accounts in 1998, which has now probably grown to be the largest of its kind with locations in every state. They are still headquartered in his Fort Lauderdale office.

He continued to work at the Lennox office for another 10 years. At that point, he also had a million square feet of mini storage which he operated under the name of Best Florida Mini Storage. He sold that in 2013 to Prudential Insurance and then started another brand a year later called Top Self Storage that offers about a half million square feet of storage.
