Three bifold doors go to work at Iowa farm and two hydraulic doors for body shop

Vic Hansen, owner of Ace Body Shop in Linn Grove, Iowa, put a 80' x 54' addition on his body shop business and has Schweiss 24' x 14' and 12' x 14' hydraulic doors placed on the sidewall entrances. He chose the hydraulic door in order to get maximum headroom to be able to work on big trucks, RVs and farm equipment.

Linn Grove, a city in Buena Vista County, Iowa located between Spencer and Storm Lake, in Northwest Iowa, has what you might consider "small town appeal." The population was 154 at the 2010 census. The nearby Chan-Ya-Ta site contains the remains of a 1000-year-old prehistoric village, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Along the Little Sioux River, it's known as the "Catfish Capitol of Iowa."

Vic Hansen, one of the towns few businessmen, has been in the body shop business since 1978 and has successfully run his own Ace Body Shop business for the past 24 years. Although Linn Grove is quite small he said they have several towns around him and business is never slow. Even though he keeps quite busy with the body shop, he also makes time to work his farm.

Last year he decided it was time to expand and erected an 80' x 54' addition to his 160' x 54' building. It was on this building that he placed two Schweiss hydraulic doors; a 24' x 14' and a 12' x 14'. The new addition is already packed with vehicles ready to be worked on.

Hansen also farms and just recently built a 50' x 100 cold storage shed with three Schweiss liftstrap/autolatch bifold doors on it; a 16', 18' and 26'. He designed the 100' x 50' building so that if in the future he wants to do something else with it, he can.

The 26' x 16' bifold door is located on one endwall; the 18' x 14' on the other endwall and the 16' x 14' was placed on the sidewall.

"I went with the larger size bifold door in order to get my farm machinery in easier. Schweiss did another excellent job on the install. I like the newer style bifold doors, they hold better in the wind and when they are closed you can hardly tell there is a door on the place unless you look really hard — it's a smooth looking building," said Hansen.

"The reason I went to hydraulic doors on the body shop is because they were to go on the side of the building and I didn't have the two-foot clearance that I needed for a bifold door. If it had been on an end wall, I probably would have gone with bifold doors," added Hansen. "When you open the hydraulic doors up you get all that clearance and when I get all done I'm going to put some lights on the doors so if I have to work on a combine or something at night I'll just open the door and work underneath it."

Before deciding on a Schweiss hydraulic door, Hansen did some checking around on another manufacturers one-piece door.

"I have a neighbor that has another brand hydraulic door, it's got wood in it and they aren't built as tough or as good as Schweiss. When he opened his door I noticed the flimsiness and decided I know which way I'm going. And every year I see them at the Clay County Fair," said Hansen. "Another neighbor of mine north of Linn Grove has a couple of Schweiss doors that have been in for years. When they are closed they give a better nice finished look instead of having an overhead door."

He added that all of his doors seal well in all types of weather and are living up to his expectations and said he may be ordering another Schweiss door soon. He commended the Schweiss install team. "They did an excellent job putting them in, they know what they are doing — it's timeliness, I kept thinking about doing it, but they come in and 'boom' they're done."

The two hydraulic insulated doors on Ace Body Shop are located at each end of the building. Hansen intends to mount the hydraulic pumps on the wall to make maximum use of space.

Hansen decided on hydraulic doors on the sidewall of his body shop to take advantage of as much headroom as he could get.

Also a farmer, Hansen recently built a 50' x 100' cold storage shed on his farm site at Linn Grove, Iowa. That structure has three Schweiss bifold doors on it. The 26' x 16' and 18' x 14' bifold liftstrap doors are on the endwalls, another 16' x 14' bifold is on the sidewall.
