Schweiss Designer Door Shines on a CEO's Backyard Hangar. When pilot Don Smith Jr. built his Pennsylvania backyard hangar, he wanted something special. So, he installed a Schweiss hangar door that opens with smooth hydraulic power.

The gabled-roof hangar mixes contemporary forms with brick, stone, and metal materials. A wall-mounted pump hides all door wiring, and light pours through the door to shine on the finished floor. The 41-foot glass hydraulic door turns the hangar into a luxury showroom for Don's plane and cars.

When Jeffrey first started contemplating building a garage for his Toronto-area home, he looked into how much a traditional structure would cost. The estimates were more than he had bargained for, and a less conventional idea started to form.

“Shipping containers were something on my mind at the time,” Jeffrey said. “The shipping container looked like a good way to go, because essentially you're getting the structure already kind of out of the box if you will.”

The owner of this property on Rainbow Lake in upstate New York went the extra mile to elevate his boat storage to another level.

The 24' wide x 12' tall strap bifold door spanning the opening is held up by the heavy-duty freestanding header. The strap latches on either side of the door secure the door when shut and hold the door against the side columns during operation.

It doesn't really matter at all if the sun is shining or not, this pool house, designed by Gauthier Architects of Brooklyn and built at upstate Accord, New York, makes any day inviting for a quick dip.

Taking up nearly the entire sidewall of the pool house is a Schweiss bifold double-glazed glass designer door that extends 34.4 ft. across and 13 ft. tall. It has an automatic latch system, electric photo eye sensors and black liftstraps. The glazed designer door, trimmed with neoprene and mahogany, gives a nice view of the wooded area outside and around the pool house.

“The homeowners have been using the door for months and absolutely love it. The pool house is a year-round play, swim, exercise, and recreational sanctuary,” said Principal Architect, Douglas Gauthier.

Jim Weitman, of Sherwood, Oregon, and his wife, Star, live on a private grass airstrip just outside of North Plains, Oregon. The hangar portion of the home measures 40' x 40'.

This privately-owned helicopter hangar in rural Purcellville, VA recently received first place 2017 Building of the Year award in the category of “Commercial Buildings under 5,000 sq. ft.” The owner, Chuck Kuhn and Fuog/InterBuild designed the post-frame barn-style hangar that really stands out with a Schweiss hydraulic one-piece 55' x 16' designer door. “Crazy Cool” bifold door sidesteps zoning restriction for unique motorhome garage!

Now you see it, now you don't. Herb Korthuis of Lynden, Washington needed to find a way to be able to garage his 45 ft. motorhome, but a local zoning ordinance prevented him from building a garage with a door higher than 8 feet. It was Schweiss to the rescue with a 16 ft. x 12 ft. bifold liftstrap door, which when in the closed position gives the visual of an 8 ft. door.

Korthuis had a contractor attach a conventional garage door front with windows to the bottom half of the Schweiss doorframe and finished off the top with siding that exactly matched his new home. In the closed position you can just barely see the seams on the door sides. It alleviated the building inspector's concerns.
