Shomotion is a company on the move

Hydraulic container door for the road

This unique 40' x 12' mobile container was designed and built by Shomotion LLC of Denver, Colorado. Inside it is a prototype fuselage of Mitsubishi’s soon to be produced 70 to 90 passenger regional jet. Schweiss Doors custom-built a 28' x 7' 11" hydraulic door for it.

Shomotion LLC, founded by Mike Scherkenbach, and based out of Denver, Colorado with offices in Chicago, Illinois is a company that has been literally on the move for over the past decade. With a fleet of late model Peterbilt and Freightliner tractors accompanied by the most eclectic trailer fleet in the industry you know they have to be on the move.

Shomotion specializes in the transportation, repositioning, customization, and lease of equipment and drivers to assist in execution of mobile marketing campaigns and other promotional events.

These promotional events have run the gamut, from providing stadium event services for top musicians like Paul McCartney, Kenny Chesney and AC/DC. Then there's NASCAR, Tylenol, Home Depot, Burger King, Chevy, ESPN/Discover Card Gameday, and the US Army that are just a sample of the name brands that rely on Shomotion to get them from point A to in front of an audience within the 48 Continental United States, Mexico and all Canadian provinces.

Schweiss Doors received a call not long ago for a custom-made rush order job for a 28' x 7' 11" hydraulic door that was to go on a mobile container unit they were custom building for an overseas aircraft corporation - and they needed it fast - eight days fast! After much research, Shomotion selected Schweiss Doors to fabricate a complete hydraulic actuated door.

"When we got the call, we gave them top priority and went right to work on it," said Schweiss Doors president, Mike Schweiss. "We like challenges, and always strive to give the best service available. Our reputation over the years speaks for itself."

Jason Rush, Director of Intermodal Logistics for Shomotion, said Schweiss Doors came through to meet their demands as scheduled and they had a truck arrive at the Schweiss Doors factory to pick up the door on the day they were told it would be finished.

Shomotion was tasked with taking the 12-foot wide airplane fuselage on a multi-city roadshow to familiarize airline executives with Mitsubishi's newest regional jet.  Due to the standard 102-inch width restrictions of traditional trailers and containers, Shomotion was forced to commission the construction of a custom 144-inch wide by 40-foot long display container with hydraulic actuated doors to showcase Mitsubishi's newest product.  Mitsubishi was adamant that the side view in display mode must be unobstructed with a clear view of the entire fuselage; no simple task with the fuselage measuring over 36-feet in length.

Mitsubishi airline executives from Nagoya-shi, Aichi, Japan traveled to Denver to go over this extraordinary project with Shomotion. From that meeting, Shomotion and its partner companies and vendors came up with a unique design to showcase a mock aircraft fuselage that would be securely seated inside a mobile container.

Shomotion was given eight weeks from design to completion to get it road ready - six weeks of that period was devoted to actual fabrication time. The mobile container needed a hydraulic door that would open wide on one side, not only to view the fuselage, but also to load and unload it.

And this wasn't just any fuselage. It would be a prototype introduction for the world's next great passenger jet - the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ). MRJ is a twin-engine regional jet aircraft seating 70-90 passengers. The container with the mockup of their fuselage was driven on a 10-week tour to airshows and to show important regional jet clients in the rebuilt jet market throughout North America with one stop in Canada.

"The mockup had never before been transported in a container and put on the road all assembled," said Rush. "We custom-built a 12-foot wide x 40-foot container with a side-mounted hydraulic door on it. From the back of the trailer there is a platform set up where you could walk into a receiving area and then inside the fuselages first class and coach seating, overhead bins and some kitchen and serving areas as well."

In addition to Schweiss Doors building one hydraulic door for it, they also supplied components for the second smaller entry door. The installation went well. Jason said the guys that fabricated the container also installed the door. He said the directions were easy to understand.

The hydraulic door was perfect for loading the fuselage in and exactly what the buyers required. It is really a high quality door. There were a few challenges; we had to make sure we had enough clearance when the door opened and closed to clear the fuselage and that the support pieces were sufficient. "It was meant to be a tradeshow show display piece, not necessarily transported, so we had to design a system to securely fasten and tie the fuselage to the container using special strapping and blocks to minimize any shock to it. The rear receiving area and the fuselage itself were air conditioned. We needed the gullwing (hydraulic) door for a dual purpose. We needed it to be able to reassembled it on a stage and to be able to slide it in the container itself. We needed the large hydraulic door for display purposes as well," noted Rush.

"The hydraulic door worked flawlessly. It was perfect for loading the fuselage in and exactly what the buyers required. It is really a high quality door. There were a few challenges; we had to make sure we had enough clearance when the door opened and closed to clear the fuselage and that the support pieces were sufficient. The client was really happy with it. The hydraulic pump was mounted on the floor inside the front of the container," explained Rush.

Shomotion's standard trailer fleet includes: 53' air-ride vans, 53' drop deck vans, 48' flatbeds and 48' step decks. Additionally, they operate a large fleet of specialized trailers that include enclosed auto transporters, climate controlled vans, 53-foot liftgates, hydraulic actuated stages and double expandable units. All trailers are equipped with E-Track load securing systems, logistics bars, 16-foot aluminum loading ramps and straps.

Their trailer fleet is comprised of air ride van trailers (28-foot to 53-foot), drop deck van trailers, step deck flatbeds, standard flatbeds, curtainsides and box trucks - all pulled by late model Peterbilt and Freightliner tractors along with various light duty trucks to pull stepdecks, flatdecks, vans, and other specialized trailers. Schweiss brings ‘new life’ to show container

From a shipping container to a beautiful showroom at Wisconsin's Oshkosh Air Show.

Schweiss Doors was called to the rescue and came through to iron out a container door hydraulic and electrical problem for an aircraft parts distributor bound for the Oshkosh Air Show in Wisconsin hoping to sell his wares there.

MATCO Mfg. President, George Happ, whose business is headquartered in Woods Cross, Utah, recalled visiting one of the Schweiss Doors sales containers at the Oshkosh Air Show. Billed as the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration, it brings in thousands of visitors each day and caters to pilots flying in on every aircraft imaginable to meet their needs. Exhibitors there run the gamut selling everything from nuts to bolts.

MATCO Mfg. produces aircraft wheels, brake and nose wheel and tail wheel assemblies, master cylinders, custom assemblies, tires and tubes, reline kits, technical manuals and many other components specifically designed for the sport aircraft market. Their motto is “Stopping at Nothing to get you Stopped.”

MATCO Mfg. has had a sales booth there since displaying at the 2001 show. In order to improve the quality of their display, Happ settled on the idea of using a shipping container as the basis for the display. Even though single-use shipping containers are widely available in the U.S., the particular style container to be used required purchase from a Mainland China company that sells containers.

“The container is designed so you can load and unload with a forklift from the side. Dealing direct with the Chinese company proved problematic,” said Happ. “For example, we needed to have a 110v electrical system. ‘Yes, we understand, no problem,&rwquo; was their response.’ Early on they sent me the manual for it that looked like they crossed out their voltage and wrote in 110v. We get the thing and plug it in and it would often blow a fuse or blow a circuit breaker after the doors came up or down. We talked to the people in China and they said it was right. Looking at the motor data plate they literally scratched in 60 hertz.”

Happ needed to get the problem straightened out so he shipped the container to Schweiss Doors who discovered additional problems with the hydraulics.

Hydraulic door show container

MATCO Mfg. Wheels & Brakes of Woods Cross, Utah ordered this container from a Chinese company only to find out there were major problems with the hydraulics and electrical. With time running out before the Oshkosh Air Show, they called on Schweiss Doors to get it working properly.

“There were things like metal or stainless lines throughout the whole system that had welded on fitting ends at high stress points. Schweiss recommended that not only should the motor-end hydraulics be changed, but also the hydraulics connecting it should be corrected. We stayed with the original actuators.”

At this point, when Schweiss Doors fixed the hydraulic problem and replaced their pump with a Schweiss pump they were looking at five weeks until show time, and they still had to make one more stop at a company called Mr. Woo’s Custom By Design to complete a lot of interior finish work on the container, giving them only about a week before they needed to have it at Oshkosh.

Flooring Added to Hydraulic Container

MATCO Mfg. added additional flooring on each side of the container that is lowered via an electric winch. They plan to improve this system by hooking it up to the Schweiss hydraulic pump.

“If I were to do it again I would order it either with no hydraulics or completely without the actuators and hydraulics and have it done domestically; even if their pricing looks good. The language barrier proved too much of a challenge,” he said. “We really dropped it on Schweiss and they were very timely in getting our problem fixed.”

Once I got the container to Schweiss I didn't have to worry about any of the work they were doing on it. Just from talking to Mike and the responsiveness of Mike and Jeremy handling it I knew everything was going to be taken care of, and that's exactly how it worked out,” said Happ.

He noted he's had a lot of people interested in the container and said it can make sense for businesses to display out of a container. His container is 9 ft. tall and 8 ft. wide and 40 ft. long, it's width stretches to 22 ft. with the side floor extensions out to give him 800 sq. ft. of display space. The hydraulic pump has more than enough power to lift up the heavy steel side doors and may someday be used to operate the floor extensions that currently move up and down with an electric winch.

With the sides out on the MATCO container it extends to 22 ft. offering 800 sq. ft. of sales space inside.

You'll also note on the MATCO Mfg. website a line that says, “SpaceShipOne Makes First Flight and Stops on MATCO Manufacturing Wheels and Brakes” -  A nice endorsement to note its products have also been used for outer space travel.

SpaceShipOne is a three-place, high-altitude research rocket, designed for sub-orbital flights to over 62-mile altitude. The unique configuration allows aircraft-like qualities for boost, glide, and landing. Top rocket engine speed was 2,186 mph. At its highest point, the rocket plane reached an altitude of 367,442 feet.

Chinese hydraulic pump system

The Chinese pump that was shipped with the container arrived with the incorrect electrical system. Once Schweiss Doors inspected it, they discovered the hydraulic lines were also haywire with metal lines that had been welded on fittings at high stress points.

Ironic, isn't it? Schweiss Doors has also had a part in space travel. Its largest 90 ft. wide x 61 ft. tall bifold liftstrap door is on a rocket hangar at Cape Canaveral.

The unfinished container was sent to the Schweiss factory where work was done to alleviate the hydraulic problems by replacing the pump and lines. After this, the container was shipped to another location to make it presentable inside and where a cabinet was built to enclose the Schweiss pump.

"Accessibility is what drove this," said Mike Schweiss. "As you drive through the countryside you'll often see unsightly temporary storage units such as empty semi trailers or shipping containers sitting in backyards or beside the road as a result of factories overrun with places to store them. Everybody has a real common problem with these as they can only be entered from the back. Now, when you stack it full, how do you get to the front? It's almost impossible. The beauty of this is the large side door that opens up the entire container changing the way people will store their things. It's a much more friendly option," said Mike Schweiss, CEO of Schweiss Doors.

What makes it different? The major difference is in the powerful hydraulic door system. The "green doors" use powerful cylinders just like any Schweiss Hydraulic Door. But these cylinders are not activated with a compact electric power pump or hydraulic fluid or oil lines and the like.

Attached to the top side of each specially designed container door cylinder, is a motor that is rated to lift 5,000 lbs. from each cylinder and a ball screw actuator, the same type used on vehicle power steering units. The DC drive utilizes a 110 volt AC power supply. Each cylinder has a limit switch which stops the movement of the door when it reaches the wide open or closed levels of travel.

Inside the container as the 30 ft. door opens

The walls inside the container are lined with 1 1/2" insulation coated with 3/8" corrugated plastic for a R-Value 14.

There's more - safety is always a big factor. The linear activated 90:1 ratio worm drive enhanced safety feature keeps the door from running backwards and closing if there is no power going to it or until you activate your door panel open/close button or your remote control. These weathertight doors can also be equipped with photo eye sensors, door base safety edges, warning horns and lights, windows or other accessories.

When the hydraulic container doors are open they provide a nice shaded canopy that opens to the entire container for easy accessibility.

Doors are constructed with 2" x 2" strong steel tubing with a built-in truss system for added strength. Containers have 1½" insulation coated with ⅜" corrugated plastic giving an R-Value of 14.

There is no need to lubricate the big side door heavy duty hinges because they have maintenance-free nylon wear-resistant bushings and removable hinge pins. The hinges are not visible from the outside when the door is closed, giving the container a nice clean look. A hydraulic door on the end of the container operates with one hydraulic cylinder and has hinges with easy access grease zerks. It also has built-in walk door.

The containers can be designed with a small room at the end that can be used for storage, a small office or whatever. The interior of the container can be equipped with a speaker system and LED lighting, making it an ideal container for multiple uses.

Should you desire to store this container where there is no access to electricity, the door can be manually run with a cordless drill or generator setup. Container doors can be built up to 50 ft. in length and have a built-in support edge to prevent bowing. When the door is open it provides a nice shaded canopy and full access to the container from one end to the other.
