Beautiful Ohio airpark hangar accented by recessed bifold door
Strange wanted his hangar to go beyond the typical look of an airport hangar door. He accomplished this by mounting the sheeting horizontally and by having the corrugated panel of the bifold door overlap in the middle. The door is also two feet inset.
JT Strange and his family are in the process of building their new home alongside their just finished hangar in the Obannon Creek Aerodrome Airpark located in Goshen, Ohio. The newly-built hangar needed a big 45 ft. x 15 ft. 11" door for his Cessna 182T, which he also uses for business in nearby Milford, Ohio.
To fill that need he decided on a Schweiss bifold liftstrap/autolatch door. JT is a National Service Specialist and Consultant for Diamond Machine Tool in Milford, Ohio and uses his plane for business and pleasure purposes. He's been flying for about five years.
When closed, it's hard to tell if this is a one piece or bifold door even when you are standing very close to it.
Bob Beckman of R.D. Beck Services, LLC in Harrison, Ohio has been selling and installing Schweiss bifold and hydraulic doors since 1999. He said that JT Strange asked for a Schweiss bifold liftstrap/autolatch remote opening door to be installed by Beckman on his new hangar. He also requested that Beckman install the door and sheeting with black corrugated sheeting on a horizontal configuration instead of vertical as some others will do.

"JT was very pleased with the finished product on his personal hangar. The building and door set it off as a real showplace," said Beckman.
One feature that sets it off from the looks of other bifold doors is Strange wanted his door inset about two feet instead of installing it on the face of the building.
"I wanted to do something totally different. It gives it a nicer look," said Strange who has an engineering background. "I kind of wanted to go beyond the typical look of an airport hangar door. By mounting the sheeting horizontally we were able to have the top corrugated panel of the bifold door overlap the lower panel of the bifold door. When you look at it, even when you are standing very close to it, the two-inch pattern appears to be seamless with no joint in the middle and looks more like a single panel hydraulic door. It came together perfectly, we couldn't ask for anything better."
The idea to put on outside cladding in this manner was Strange's idea. He said Beckman looked at him like he was crazy, but it worked out great. When Beckman installed the door he had to battle the winter elements during the worst winter they had in a long time. In addition to that, the semi that delivered the door was unable to make a sharp turn crossing a bridge leading to the community. The door had to be offloaded onto a smaller truck.
Strange said he was first introduced to Schweiss doors through a neighbor living in his same airpark. This neighbor had become familiar with Schweiss doors while attending the Oshkosh Air Show where he had talked to Mike Schweiss, owner of Schweiss Doors.
Four liftstraps easily lift the 45 ft. bifold door. Interior sheeting gives it a nice clean look.
"I researched a lot of other hangar door companies, but along the lines of making the personal contact (with my neighbor) I was pretty much sold on Schweiss and went that way. It wasn't even a matter of cost at that point anymore, I went on the reputation that Schweiss had," commented Strange.
Using his engineering background he decided on a bifold door over a one-piece hydraulic door due to the fact there was less surface area for wind conditions. He agreed that it was also a better door in heavy snow conditions.
"I like the autolatches and remote opener. The batt insulated door operates very quietly and is dressed up with cedar interior trim to match the garage door. The door opens and closes fine. I still need to add seals on both sides of the door. We did an all steel structure with I-beams giving it extra support. I haven't got my plane in there yet, but I'm excited to get more use out of it by next spring. I'd recommend Schweiss doors to others 100 percent," said Strange.
The inside of the hangar is painted in a patriotic red, white and blue with a large American flag on the backwall. Strange said he is patriotic and appreciated all the sacrifices veterans have made. His dad is a Vietnam veteran.
The top corrugated panel of the bifold door overlaps the lower panel making it appear seamless when closed like that of a one-piece hydraulic door.
He is still has not completely finished the inside of the hangar which will function somewhat as a showroom. It's laid out with two bays on both sides. The right side of the hangar as you look into it will be a workshop/garage area to work on projects. The left side will be more of a mancave/lounge and for home office use.
What he likes most about his door is the look of it.
"That's because when it comes to the mechanics of it - the operation of the motor and everything else, there have been no issues with it whatsoever," said Strange. "It's like you don't even think about the mechanics of it, it's very sound, even the autolatching system. That's why I haven't added the foam on both sides of the door. It pulls so tight in, it's pretty much sealed up already,"
Beckman said he has no preference regarding hydraulic one-piece doors over bifold doors.
"They both have their place, it depends on the building and needs of my customers," noted Beckman. I only sell and replace with Schweiss doors. When people ask him why a Schweiss door is better than other makes, he said he explains, as a pilot himself, that his personal hangar has a Schweiss door on it.
"I tell them that Schweiss is a phone call away with an outstanding support group that will help with any technical question or problem on the spot. I still have the old style cable door on my hangar and it has never failed me, but since then, Schweiss has improved and added even more features to their doors. I tell them that Schweiss will always stand behind their doors," explained Beckman.
Beckman has also kept busy doing cable to liftstrap conversions. Recently he replaced cables with liftstraps and autolatches at the U.C. Health Air Care & Mobile Care bifold door at Butler County. They were concerned that since they open their door up to 10 times a day, every day, they couldn't have a door that would malfunction at any time. He recommended the strap conversion and they are very happy with it.
The building contractor for the hangar was Mark Kimura of Inspired Custom Homes, LLC of Cincinnati, who is now in the process of building Strange's new home. He appreciated the valuable structural information he was able to get from the Schweiss Doors engineers.
"Everything went together on the recessed door design changes," said Kimura. "The architect originally had the hangar framed in wood, we changed that to steel. When I called Schweiss during the preliminary stages, I knew right off the bat we were changing the structural makeup and would have to beef it up with steel. From the specifications from Schweiss I was able to get wedge height and other information to obtain the highest clearance possible. A lot of things came together before the installer came with the door. Recessing the door went together really well and made Beckman's job a lot easier. I was able to coordinate with the structural engineer and get everything perfect for finished height of door. I'd like others who order Schweiss doors to know that you have a lot of flexibility to create the look and function of a door," noted Kimura.
